Local Students Attend Camp Aerospace at NASA's Plum Brook Station

CLEVELAND -- On Friday, November 6, 26 students from Briar Middle School will participate in Camp Aerospace at NASA Glenn Research Center's Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, Ohio. The day will begin at 9 a.m. and include hands-on activities and a facility tour.

Camp Aerospace is an opportunity to expose students to NASA and the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The activities are specifically designed to inspire the students in these fields, encourage team building and advance problem-solving skills.

NASA astronaut and Ohio native Sunita (Suni) Williams will be part of the camp experience that day, meeting with the students and answering questions. Williams, who holds the record for longest spaceflight by a woman, was born in Euclid, Ohio. She spent 195 days in space, 190 of them as a flight engineer aboard the station. The schedule of activities includes:

  • 9 a.m. -- Orientation
  • 9:15 a.m. -- Build and Fly a Paper Rocket Activity
  • 10:45 a.m. -- Astronaut Sunita Williams Presentation
  • 11:45 a.m. -- Lunch
  • 12:15 p.m. -- Design and Build a Mars Lander Activity
  • 1:30 p.m. -- Tour of B-2 Facility
  • 2:00 p.m. -- Mars Lander Drops
  • 2:30 p.m. -- Activities Debriefing

Williams launched on space shuttle Discovery's STS-116 mission in December 2006. She then joined the Expedition 14 crew aboard the station and stayed on the complex to become a member of the Expedition 15 crew in April 2007. She came home on space shuttle Atlantis' STS-117 mission that landed at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. on June 22, 2007.

Camp Aerospace is the product of a group of Glenn engineers participating in a year-long NASA-wide leadership development program called NASA FIRST (Foundations of Influence, Relationships, Success and Teamwork).

Reporters are invited to Camp Aerospace to cover this educational event. Those interested in attending should contact Sally Harrington at 216-433-2037 or the Glenn's Media Relations Office at 216-433-2901 by noon on Thursday, November 5, to be cleared through security.
